NEW QUICK-LINK (QL) FAMILY OF LOGGING PROBES
Stackable probe functions for various common applications could include a few possible combinations listed in the Table Below. For example a classic coal stack of spectral gamma + focused resistivity + dual density / caliper is possible, or if you are using a heavy duty wireline, full waveform sonic could be added as another middle sub. In a mineral exploration project you may want to run spectral gamma + induced polarization + magnetic susceptibility + acoustic televiewer in one borehole pass. This combination will help in your petrophysical properties analysis, minimizing the time and risk spent in the borehole environment

MSI's long list of custom stand-alone tools, including the popular 2GHF-10000 triple gamma along with our wide range of slimline gamma tools and the HFP-2292 heat pulse flow meter (and new higher range HFP ), are always available. MSI is also developing a new, reliable, large dynamic range flow meter tool. Contact us for details.
In addition to the QL Series, we are also developing a QL43 family of probes designed for higher temperature (125°C) and pressure (400 Bar) borehole environments. Our partners at ALT - Luxembourg are continuing development of their 85mm diameter line of gamma - televiewer tools designed for the geothermal industry. These tools have temperature ratings to 300° C.
WHAT'S NEW IN WELLCAD
The latest version of WellCAD is Version 4.3. Many of you have upgraded to 4.2 and enjoyed the Formation Marker Log Type (display and store Multi-well formation markers), the ability to measure and record fracture aperture, CGM export and WellCAD Automation. In 4.3 we now have a new Breakout Log Type (see graphic below) in addition to a new Tracking Bar for detailed quick-look examination of log data, and a new Statistical Bar, allowing users to export log stats to an ASCII file quickly and easily. Another nice feature is the new Alias Table which allows us to apply alias mnemonics to data channel / log titles for databases and templates. We think you will agree that our partner's at Advanced Logic Technology (ALT) - Luxembourg have addressed customer requests to make WellCAD a versatile and powerful log analysis and presentation tool for your applications.
Image Module Features
The new Breakout log type allows users to fit lines and polygons to an image and pick vertical features such as borehole breakouts or tensile fractures interactively. With each pick the Depth, Azimuth, Tilt against the borehole axis, Length of the feature and Opening angle will be recorded and stored in the data repository of the log. User defined attribute classes can used to describe and rank the picked features. New WellCAD features will be presented at seminars in conjunction with the PDAC Conference - Toronto, March 2, 2009, and SAGEEP in Dallas April 2, 2009. Other WellCAD workshops and seminars are being planned, so contact us for more details.

The Structure Log type has undergone a major renovation. It is now possible to interactively determine and store the aperture of joints along with their dip and dip direction. By dragging a fitted sinusoid users can determine apparent aperture as shown here. In addition to depth, dip and azimuth the true aperture is stored in the new Structure Type data format. |
BRILLANCE!
MSI is experimenting with a new scintillation material for spectral gamma tool applications. The manufacturer of the BrilLanCe®380 [LaBr3(Ce)] transparent scintillator says this material has superior energy resolution, fast emission and excellent linearity. It has higher light output the commonly used NaI(Tl) crystals. "The energy spectrum for 662 keV photons from 137Cs has FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) of 2.8% for full energy peak in a 1" diameter by 1" long crystal. The material's superior energy resolution is most pronounced at energies above 100keV when compared to NaI(Tl)."
LaBr3 Information:
- Ø Developed at Delft and Bern Universities in 2002
- Ø High light output, excellent linearity
- Ø Very high resolution (2X to 3X better than NaI(Tl)
- Ø Excellent temperature stability (-20 to 175 deg. C)
- Ø Fast decay times (capable of up to 20X times more cps than NaI(Tl)
MSI is currently testing this material for the 2SNA-1000-S spectral gamma tool function. Contact us for details.
NEW! MX SERIES MOTOR-LOCK OPTION
MSI is now offering a motor-lock option for MX winches, our part number 4MXA-1700. The motor-lock adds an additional level of safety and can be fitted to your existing winch, or added as an option to your new winch order. The popular MX Series winches are typically spooled with 1/8" (3.17mm) diameter single-conductor wireline with standard lengths of 500, 800 & 1000 meters. The 4MXB winch can be spooled with up to 480m of 3/16" (4.76mm) single-conductor, 4-conductor, or coaxial (video) wireline.
NEW MSI WEB
Our web site is changing! The new multi-lingual site should be up and running by the end of March 2009. We will have a member's only section for customers, Reps and associates to upload / download files. We will post Matrix software & firmware updates, .tol file developments, data processing techniques, etc. through this medium. Case histories, geophysical well logging applications, equipment manuals and drawings will be available. You can also view prior Sopris Signals Newsletters.
MSI SPIRIT OF SERVICE TRAINING & SUPPORT
MSI frequently performs training for customer around the world. In January 2009, MSI President John Stowell traveled to Peru and Chile to train customers at the Universidad de Piura in northern Peru, and our Australian-based customers from Anglo-American at the El Soldado mine in Chile.
Both of these systems include the 4MXA-1000, 500 meter winch, a Matrix Console and WellCAD. The Universidad de Piura has the 2SNA-1000, Gamma/SP/SPR probe and a three-arm caliper tool, while the El Soldado project includes induced polarization and a combo induction / magnetic susceptibility
Also in January 2009 our good friends at Technos, Inc. in Miami FL allow MSI Sales Engineer Jim LoCoco to use their office facility to stage training for new Venezuelan customers on similar Matrix 500m geophysical logging systems. During this training, we were also helped by the US Geological Survey Ft. Lauderdale who provided access to a nearby monitoring well for logging / training.
