Logshell Downloads

Overview

Read the following or click  Download Logshell.

Mount Sopris Instruments is making available for download, by all customers with a valid license, versions of the obsolete program LOGSHELL which is the MGX and MGX II acquisition software for DOS version 5 or later. Version 2.23 also runs in protected mode DOS under Windows 95/98.  Logshell acquisition has been replaced by the windows program MSLog. Logshell post acquisition plotting has been replaced by the windows program Wellcad.

Logshell is DOS software and as such has problems running on machines faster that about 150mhz. Click the following link to see more information on this topic.

Customers using Logshell on Celeron (Pentium) or other fast PC's click here  for more information on MOSLO.

Logshell is  available for download to all customers with a valid license. There  are three versions for download, v2.20 for the MGX, v2.20 for the MGX II and v2.23 for the MGX and MGX II.  Logshell acquisition software will not operate any MGX II which uses MSLog. Trying to run an MSLog-MGX II with Logshell  may scramble operational constants making the MGX II inoperable.

Logshell version 2.23

Logshell version 2.23  takes full advantage of installed RAM above the old 640K DOS limitation. Earlier versions of Logshell required up to 600K of free RAM in the lower memory, which caused difficulties for some users who were operating PCs with modems, network adapters and other non-standard hardware devices. LOGSHELL version 2.23 can be operated in Win95/98 protected mode, enabling program swapping during log processing. It is strongly recommended that no swapping take place during log data acquisition, to protect data integrity. The METASHEL graphics driver has been updated and combined into the executable program files and is now transparent to the user.

Logshell version 2.23 allows the user to install logging software for both the MGX and MGX II loggers at the same time, in one installation. This allows the user who operate both the MGX and MGX II systems to easily switch between loggers with minimal effort. Probe drivers are included in the installation.

System requirements

Logshell v2.23 requires at a minimum a 386 CPU, with 2 Mb Ram (8Mb required for Win95), at least 8Mb free hard drive space, a 3.5" floppy drive, and a VGA graphics adapter and display. A standard parallel port is required to plot log data, and Logshell must have a standard serial port operating and 9600 baud to communicate with the logger. Logshell automatically configures the serial port speed, and version 2.21 and later, allows the user to select the serial port number (com1, com2, etc).

Logshell v 2.21 can operate with DOS v5.0 or greater, and Windows95/98 (in protected mode DOS).

Note:  Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows NT, Windows 2000, do not have protected mode DOS.

What does my MGX II need to be compatible with this software?

The firmware, that is the programs in the microprocessors, in the MGX II must be the correct version to operate with Logshell version 2.23. The firmware version is affected by the crystal frequency of the Master processor. The crystal is a half-inch long, narrow metal can with numbers, indicating its operating frequency, written on top. The crystal is next to U1 on the main board of the MGX II. Just to the left of the crystal is the label X1.

For systems with a master crystal frequency of 24 MHZ:

Master, part number: 8109-0080 or newer      (main board U1)

Slave, part number 8106-0104   or newer      (main board U2)

Depth slave, part number: 8104-0081 or newer (depth board U9)

Which is typical in systems running Logshell v2.20 or earlier and those that have been field upgraded to Logshell v2.21 or later. Most MGX II model 4MGB-1000 loggers, with integrated winch and electronics (side by side), operate at this frequency. The model and serial number is posted on the side of the electronics. It is no guarantee of the crystal frequency, however, and visual inspection of the label crystal in the electronics is the only way to be positive.

For systems with a master crystal frequency of 22.1184 MHz:

Master, part number: 8109-0099 or newer      (main board U1)

Slave, part number 8106-0104 or newer       (main board U2)

Depth slave, part number: 8104-0081 or newer (depth board U9)

This frequency is required for peripheral circuit boards.

22.1184 MHZ is the standard frequency for all new MGX II model 5MCA-1000 top mount style electronics consoles. However some older units may have a 24 MHZ crystal in them.

If your firmware is older than the versions listed above you should download Logshell version 2.20.

Logshell version 2.20 Download

This  Logshell version 2.20 download contains the contents of the installation diskette. Use this version if your firmware is not compatible with Logshell version 2.23 There are MGX and MGX II versions. Contact Mount Sopris Instruments if you have any questions.

The download files are LSMX22.exe for the MGX or LSMII22.exe for the MGX II (approximately 1.4MB). Each is a self-extracting file that contains the Logshell distribution disk contents.

Download/setup instructions:

1)     Download the file by clicking on its link. Make note of the location on your drive that you downloaded to. Make sure to save to disk .

2) Label a diskette LS with the DOS command Label a:LS (assuming the diskette is in the a: drive).

4)     Backup any custom .pb4 files and data files from your existing installation.

3)     You can remove your current directories or install over them.

4)     Expand the package by running LSMX22.exe or LSMII22.exe, whichever is applicable, double-click the file from your Windows Explorer.

5) Copy the files to the diskette you labeled LS.

6)  Follow your original installation instructions.

    a) .     Click Start, Run a:Install.

See below for Logshell version 2.23.

NOTE: On PCs faster than 150mhz you may need to download, install and use MOSLO to run the Logshell install.exe.  Runtime error 200 is the most usual error generated by Logshell programs when the processor speed is too high.

As an example: Click Start, Run c:\moslo\moslo /25 a:\install.exe

Consult the MOSLO documentation.

Logshell version 2.23 Download

This  Logshell version 2.23 download contains the contents of the three installation diskettes. There are MGX and MGX II versions. Contact Mount Sopris Instruments if you have any questions.

The download file is LSMGX223.exe for the MGX or MGX II (approximately 3.02Mb). It is a self-extracting file that contains the three Logshell distribution disks contents.

Download/setup instructions:

1)     Download the file by clicking on its link. Make note of the location on your drive that you downloaded to. Make sure to save to disk .

2) Label three diskettes in turn,  LS1, LS2, LS3 with the DOS command Label a:LS1 etc. (assuming the diskette is in the a: drive).

4)     Backup any custom .pb4 files and data files from your existing installation.

3)     You can remove your current directories or install over them.

4)     Expand the package by running LSMGX223.exe double-click the file from your Windows Explorer. The extractor will put three folders Disk1, Disk2, Disk3, representing, respectively, the three distribution disks, LS1, LS2, LS3,  in c:\Program Files\Logshell 223 (by default).

5) Copy the files from each folder to the respective diskette you labeled LS1, LS2, LS3.

6)  Follow your original installation instructions.

    a) On the destination machine.     Click Start, Run a:setup.
